Posters that look high-tech and galactic are certainly spotlight stealers. Made with mesmerizing color combos – blue, purple, pink, neon colors, semi-transparent effects, liquid effects, iridescent effects, and 3D effects, these designs look like they’ve come from the future. It epitimises the Bohemian, Art Nouveau style and Cabaret culture of late nineteenth century Paris that stemmed from the legendary venue, which, in its heyday, served as an artist salon, music hall and busy nightclub.

The 1936 Games was dominated by propaganda, as Hitler grasped the opportunity to promote the Nazi line of Aryan racial superiority. Thankfully, the black athlete Jesse Owens won four gold medals and made Hitler look pretty stupid. We can't deny, however, that the poster designed by Franz Würbel was brilliant, showcasing one of Berlin's most iconic landmarks. It made the Führer happy it seems, after 44 of Germany's finest artists had failed. The design team Helmo – Thomas Couderc and Clément Vauchez – created this dramatic series of posters for a fashion event at the Galeries Lafayette in Paris.

Combine multiple design influences for a truly creative poster idea

Gig posters are an arena in which graphic designers can really indulge their passion for both art and music. So, it's always a delight to see music festivals and designers coming together to produce something incredibly special; that's exactly what Green Man festival and the UK Poster Association have done here. The poster design is centred on the written phrase 'I stammer', which is stretched in places to represent the pauses that occur across various designs, including posters. The spaces are filled with the thoughts and frustrations that often go through the mind of someone who stammers during these moments. The aim is to correct common misconceptions, such as the idea that people stammer because they’re nervous.

National Lampoon's Animal House 1978 Plot

The script, by Douglas Kenney, Chris Miller and Harold Ramis, aimed to capture the rude, subversive humor of the magazine, but the story — about the unruly fraternity Delta House at fictional Faber College — left Hollywood’s establishment cold. “Animal House,” which was made for $2.1 million, went on to gross $141.6 million domestically after its release on July 28, 1978. The actors say they were punched and fled from the party. “I wanted people to accept that character as Eric Stratton, not ‘I'm Chevy Chase and you're not,’” he added, referring to Chase’s popular "Saturday Night Live" signature line.

In 1978, Universal’s film division president, Ned Tanen, was in a rage about the not-yet-released Kennedy-era comedy. He was particularly livid over a scene in which white fraternity brothers and their sorority dates feel threatened by a roadhouse full of African-Americans. There will be riots across America,’” the director John Landis recalled in a recent interview. The film's significant cultural impact can be seen across many college campuses in the United States. At Harding University, a private Christian university affiliated with the Churches of Christ, Titans Men's Social Club refuses to put on a spring formal for its members. Instead, the men of Titans choose to celebrate an event called "TOGA" which is heavily inspired by the iconic toga concert from the movie.

"I found John [Landis] to be extremely warm and funny," he said. "In fact, I would run into him [in the Village] sometimes after we did the movie, and he was always a super friendly and generous guy. He was cool. I really liked John." The young actor's castmates would throw nightly parties just a few short feet from his bed. "We're all staying at the same motel, but these guys would have parties with music, and Bruce McGill," he recalled. "And they were all super cool, and their parties were great, and there were girls around, and I was never invited. I was never part of that thing." The Deltas were still in a fighting spirit when the Omegas came onto the set.

He later discovers that she is the 13-year-old daughter of Carmine DePasto, the town mayor. National Lampoon's Animal House is a 1978 American comedy film directed by John Landis and written by Harold Ramis, Douglas Kenney and Chris Miller. It stars John Belushi, Tim Matheson, John Vernon, Verna Bloom, Thomas Hulce and Donald Sutherland.

The Dexter Lake Club, twenty miles east of Eugene, was the location for the "road trip" scene, where four Deltas take their dates to hear their favorite R&B group, Otis Day and the Knights. After being turned down by the University of Missouri, Universal Studios approached the University of Oregon in September 1977. I am so impressed by the breadth and depth of the movies that are inducted into the Registry, and equally as impressed by the hip crowd that appreciates the film. I think you have the edge of history to look back and see that the film still holds up. In the scene where Verna [Bloom, the Dean’s wife] kicks off her shoe, they put a sound-effect of breaking glass to continue the comedic spirit. Landis gets comedy so well, and there are so many wonderful moments like that in the movie.

Belushi’s cafeteria scene shoving food in his mouth was improv, but he knew where the scene was going; “That boy is a P-I-G pig! ” They shot footage of everyone hanging out at the toga party. Bruce McGill playing his throat, and Belushi smashing the guitar on the stairs was improv. Donald Sutherland, the most famous and highest paid actor in the film, was cast as the beloved professor. Bacon feels grateful to have been a part of the "Animal House" cast and holds no ill will towards Landis today.

One of things that the “Lampoon” did was look at pivotal moments in your life, and in this case, captured the underlying college drama. “Animal House” is set in 1962, and the rumblings of change were coming. If you remember in the parade scene, there is a float with the white hand shaking the black hand and then goes apart, the girls are dressed like Jackie Kennedy, and even the Dexter Lake Club scenes have really racist moments.

'Animal House': A look back at the classic film 40 years later

While each character has their own storyline and point-of-view, Otter is seen as the unofficial leader steering and instigating much of the outrageous Delta House behavior. The Library of Congress spoke with Tim Matheson in February 2021 about his behind-the-scenes experiences, the film’s legacy, and its induction into the National Film Registry. It was 20 years ago that the Library of Congress added “National Lampoon’s Animal House” to the National Film Registry. Originally released in 1978 and inducted in 2001, “Animal House” remains one of the most quoted and iconic comedy films in history.

Today, the film has become part of the culture of the University—a part of its brand. Movie locations are pointed out on campus tours, and Otis Day and the Knights' rendition of "Shout" is sung at Duck football games. People in Eugene and Cottage Grove take pride in having helped create a classic American comedy. In his limited spare time, Belushi, who played Bluto Blutarsky, made friends with Portland blues musician Curtis Salgado, who is credited with helping spark Belushi's enthusiasm for urban blues and contributing to the creation of the Blues Brothers. Belushi and his wife Judy also had dinner at the home of writer Ken Kesey, who lived in Pleasant Hill.

He described the film to Chase in Cosmopolitan as a "grueling shoot", in which "every one of us fell out of the boat at one point or another and had to be saved". I was also in a series with Kurt Russell called “The Quest” in 1976. I was in “Yours, Mine and Ours,” and voiced “Jonny Quest.” I was always playing “nice guy” parts and wanted to branch out. I started taking an improv class with The Groundlings and read the script for “Animal House.”  I loved the “Lampoon” [magazine] and it was the funniest and most unique script that I’d ever read.

Animal House Oral History: From Richard Pryor to a Real Melee The New York Times

I can’t remember too many takes that we had to start and stop. This helped with continuity and gave the movie some magic moments. The scene with me and the Dean’s wife wasn’t really blocked out. I try to hang her coat and missed the hanger, then I try to put ice in the glass and a few cubes pop out.

'Animal House': Behind the scenes

"We walked into a coffee shop, and the Deltas were at a table with Landis," recalled Mark Metcalf, who plays the authoritarian nightmare Neidermeyer. "He said, 'It's Neidermeyer! Get him!' They started throwing food and yelling at us." Much of the film was made up of little-known actors like Tim Matheson, who played the smooth-talking Eric “Otter” Stratton – a role originally written for Chevy Chase. Over three decades ago the University of Oregon tried, unsuccessfully, to hide its participation in Animal House.

The party the actors went to was held at a university frat house. According to Matheson, someone came up to him and said them they should not be there. Unconcerned, the Deltas organize a toga party, recruiting Pinto and Flounder to shoplift party supplies from a supermarket. At the market, Pinto meets a young cashier named Clorette and invites her to the party, while Otter flirts with an older woman, who turns out to be Wormer's alcoholic wife, Marion. During the toga party, at which Otis Day and the Knights perform, Otter seduces Marion, while Pinto and Clorette make out until she passes out, drunk. Pinto resists the temptation to rape her and instead takes her home in a shopping cart.

IV. STARRING MEAT LOAF AS BLUTO

Bacon might have been new to acting when he scored his first role in "Animal House," but the director wasn't going to take it easy on him just because he was green. Chip was an Omega, he was one of the bad guys, and Landis wasn't going to show him any mercy — especially during his hazing scene. "They showed me the paddle Metcalf was going to use on me, and it was made of balsa wood," Bacon recounted. "I was like, 'No problem.' But Landis had him hit me over and over. In the script, my character said 'Thank you, sir, may I have another?' maybe three times. Landis kept yelling, 'Again! Again! Again!' and it definitely started to sting."

This movie is featured in the following articles.

Sometime later, Chip is informed, most likely by Doug or Greg that the college dean, Vernon Wormer wishes their frat to help him find a way to expel the Deltas. The Omegas find a way when they switch the test papers to make all of cheating Deltas get every answer wrong. In revenge, the Deltas create chaos at the homecoming parade, to which Chip attempts to calm down the screaming people, which fails when he is flattened like a pancake after a group of people stomp on him.

In the "Where Are They Now?" segment on the special features on the DVD, Chip reveals that after he graduated Faber, he was not able to enroll in Vietnam due to the fact that his father was a major financial contributor to various conservative politicians. After learning about Neidermeyer's death, he grew cynical and after earning his NBA, he started to smoke and drink constantly. After his 30th birthday, he started seeing Jesus in his food and redeemed himself. He later visited Africa to teach the people about Jesus and is thinking about also visiting Iraq. I was in “The Virginian” and “Bonanza” for about a year.

The film is about a trouble-making fraternity whose members challenge the authority of the dean of the fictional Faber College. The film spawned a new genre of uninhibited comedy films appealing to young audiences. Animal House is ranked thirty-sixth on the American Film Institute's list of the hundred greatest film comedies of all time.

Belushi, who played Bluto, died in 1982 at the age of 33. “The only movie star who I knew to call a favor in was Donald Sutherland,” said Landis. Despite a budget of just $2 million, the studio still wanted a bona fide star in the cast. Starring Tom Hulce, who went on to play Mozart in “Amadeus,” and Karen Allen, who would later co-star in “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, “Animal House” also marked the debut of Kevin Bacon.

V. DRUNK FOOTBALL PLAYERS DYING FOR BLOOD

He may have gone back for a few pick-ups, but all one take. To me, the scene at Emily Dickinson College for Fawn Liebowitz was one of the most perfect scenes I’d ever read as an actor. I had so much fun with it, but didn’t want to overact it. I knew I had to ride the wave and let it happen naturally. Being left out of the Deltas' camaraderie was difficult for Bacon, but it ultimately made sense for his character.

kevin bacon animal house

Similarly to his brothers, Chip is snobby, sarcastic and rude pledge boy. I had a lot of fun lines and we had a great time shooting it. “Animal House” was a five-week shoot, but he had the Deltas come in a week early to just hang out. For a week, we ate together, toured the set, watched the Deathmobile being built, and just hung out. But it may be Tim Matheson’s portrayal of Eric “Otter” Stratton that captures the free-spirit, charming, and just over-the-line antics that fans love about the film. Otter’s dynamic with Boon (played by Peter Reigert) is an easy, free-flowing best-friendship that is at the center of this wonderful band of misfits.

Meanwhile, Chip Diller is accepted into Omega house and given a paddling as part of his initiation. Chip Diller is an Omega pledge and a minor antagonist in the film National Lampoon's Animal House. He is also a member of Faber College's ROTC cadets, led by Douglas C. Neidermeyer.

The cast included several young actors—Karen Allen, Tom Hulce, Tim Matheson, and Kevin Bacon—some of them appearing in their first film roles. It was director John Landis’s first major Hollywood movie. Universal Studios also made agreements with two fraternities to use their houses, located just off campus in the 700 block of East 11th Avenue. The Eugene Half-way House, between the two fraternity houses, became the derelict Delta fraternity house. City officials in Cottage Grove, twenty-three miles south of Eugene, agreed to close down Main Street for three days to allow filming of the climactic homecoming parade scene. The University of Oregon celebrates its participation in the film.

It's interesting that Metcalf viewed his alienation from the party as his choice as an actor, while Bacon was positive that he just wasn't invited. Regardless of their reasons, the Omegas were successfully isolated from the Deltas, just like Landis had intended. It might have been a little mean-spirited, but it helped to produce a revered staple of comedy history.

When auditions for extras were held at the university’s Erb Memorial Union on October 18, 150 men and 50 women were chosen to appear in the film, earning $2.30 an hour. The men were told to get haircuts so they would look the part of college students in 1962. The actors got haircuts at a local barbershop, after a Hollywood stylist proved inadequate. Bacon left home at age 17 to pursue a theater career in New York City, where he appeared in a production at the Circle in the Square Theater School. "I wanted life, man, the real thing", he later recalled to Nancy Mills of Cosmopolitan.

It was not really Jack Daniels, but some kind of tea or colored liquid. I think Landis said it best that Belushi was like the Cookie Monster with his sweet lovable comedic demeanor. He was supportive and appreciative of what I was doing and what everyone was doing.

I got a call back to do it again, and that went even better. After that audition, Landis came out and told me “We love you. And while there was not a lot of ad-libbing, the set’s spirit of anarchy did creep into the film.

This hugely influential 1914 advertisement by Alfred Leete – often referred to as 'Britons Wants You' – became an icon of the enlistment frenzy in Britain during WWI. The poster features Lord Kitchener, the British secretary of state for war, above the words “wants you”, and set the tone for hundreds of copycat posters the world over. Joost Schmidt’s now iconic poster for the 1923 Bauhaus Exhibition shows a cross comprised of circles and squares, and includes the Bauhaus logo designed by Oskar Schlemmer. Music venues don’t get much more indie or experimental than Knochenbox in Berlin – it occupies a crypt under a chapel. It’s fitting, then, that this gig poster also steps away from the norm. The limited-edition screenprint poster is the work of Palefroi, Berlin-based French design duo Damien Tran and Marion Jdanoff.

The extra bold color was what initially caught my eye, and I’m guessing your eye as well. I would recommend featuring a border on all your minimalist posters, like above. The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter Universal Studios Hollywood

After her diadem was stolen by her daughter, Helena, Rowena fell ill and never recovered. Though she tried to find and see her daughter one last time, she died before she could do so. Helga Hufflepuff was a Welsh witch who, when founding her Hogwarts House, decided that what she needed her students to be, above all else, was loyal, hardworking, and kind. She invited students from all different backgrounds, treated them equally, and brought them together to be united by patience and tolerance. In part, perhaps due to the house's emphasis on courage, its members are often at the heart of the wizarding world's greatest conflicts. It was Harry, Ron, and Hermione who kept Voldemort from using the Philosopher's Stone to resurrect himself, and it was the same three who discovered and closed the Chamber of Secrets, killing the Basilisk within.

Gryffindor after the series

The Sorting Hat would only put you in this house if you demonstrated excellent wisdom, wit and a skill for learning. Ravenclaws are often known for being quite eccentric and most of the great wizarding inventors and innovators have come from this house. Gryffindor house is where you would find the pluckiest and most daring students (there’s a reason the house symbol is the brave lion). The house colours are scarlet and gold, the common room lies up in Gryffindor Tower and the Head of House is Professor Minerva McGonagall. Every year, millions flock to Stratford-upon-Avon, England, to visit the house known as Shakespeare’s Birthplace.

What your Hogwarts house animal and colours could mean

However, when he was unsuccessful in convincing her to come home, he killed her and then died by suicide. House ghosts are typically former students who choose to become ghosts upon their deaths and return to Hogwarts to help serve future students. The Gryffindor house ghost is Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, also known to students as Nearly Headless Nick. He was executed in 1492, though his beheading wasn't completely successful because his head was still attached to his body by a half-inch flap of skin. If you want to know more about the Hogwarts houses and the famous witches and wizards in each one, we've put together everything you need to know about Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw. While this article won't help you sort yourself into a Hogwarts house, it gives you exactly what you need to know before you put on the Sorting Hat.

Play the official Sorting Ceremony in Spanish, French and German

Some houses are more popular than others, and some have better reputations, but the houses give every student at the wizarding school a home away from home and a group of people that are similar to them. Some of the most famous characters in the Harry Potter series that were part of the Hufflepuff house were Newt Scamander (from the Fantastic Beasts series), Cedric Diggory, Nymphadora Tonks, and Hogwarts’ herbology professor Pomona Sprout. For years, Hogwarts, its founders, and all students lived in property and peace; however, it didn’t last forever.

Now that the history has been told let us dive a little into each specific house. It is unclear if the Sorting Hat tended to place students based on qualities they valued or rather qualities they exhibited. One example of the former is Peter Pettigrew, who was sorted into Gryffindor but ultimately turned out to be quite cowardly, self-serving and corruptible. He may have been placed there because, at the time, he admired strong, brave individuals like James Potter and Sirius Black. Other examples include Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle, who despite being stupid and rather lazy, were placed in Slytherin, the House of the cunning and ambitious.

Wands purchased from Ollivander's Wand Shop can be used to perform "magic" at various indicated locations, using sensors that track the movements of the wands. While performing different "spells" from the Harry Potter universe, fans can produce different reactions, such as unlocking a cabinet, opening a box of candy (Chocolate Frogs), and forcing a ruler to lower itself. After the successful debut of a similarly themed area at Universal Orlando Resort, Universal Parks & Resorts announced the construction of a second Wizarding World of Harry Potter on December 6, 2011. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood officially began operation on April 7, 2016. Typically, you would present someone with a bunch of yellow roses to signify this relationship.

The attraction—the second Harry Potter-themed area to exist at a Universal resort—was designed by Universal Creative from an exclusive license with Warner Bros. The animal that represents Ravenclaw in the books is not a raven but a majestic eagle. When you think about how this house is tied to the element air, a bird that soars through the sky is symbolically appropriate. Again, a fitting symbol for a house whose founder’s motto was ‘wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure’.

Rowena chose the high-flying eagle as the house animal, symbolizing air, their corresponding element, and blue and bronze as their colors. Additionally she placed Ravenclaw's common room and dormitories in a tower on the west side of the castle grounds, and made sure that its entrance was blocked by a door that would only open for students who could solve its daily riddle. Its corresponding element is earth, and one of its original students, Hengist of Woodcroft, founded the wizarding village of Hogsmeade near the Hogwarts Castle grounds. Hogwarts Castle

He is included in the History of Magic curriculum at Hogwarts for his escapades. The Hufflepuff dormitories can be found by the Hogwarts kitchens, which are located directly beneath the Great Hall. To enter, students must tap a certain barrel within a stack of barrels to the rhythm of their house founder's name. If students tap the wrong pattern or use the wrong barrel, they will be covered in vinegar. The common room is filled with plants, and a portrait of Helga Hufflepuff sits above a mantel. Many of the windows are round, and the doors to get to the dorms are also round.

We can imagine you’re the kind of person who is always one step ahead, has a dark sense of humour, thinks reputation is important, takes pride in their appearance and doesn’t let anyone see their soft side. To do this, Godric Gryffindor used his magical hat – henceforward known as the Sorting Hat – to decide which children should go into which house, and so it has been ever since with a yearly Sorting Ceremony that places each new pupil into their own new home. Stratford-upon-Avon lies two hours northwest of London in the Midlands, more or less the heart of England. Today, it is one of Britain’s most popular tourist destinations, drawing up to three million visitors a year. The Birthplace is its main attraction, followed by the cottage reputed to be the place where Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare’s wife, grew up.

Students of House Gryffindor often emerged as valiant leaders throughout the Second Wizarding War against Voldemort and his Death Eaters. They were the ones who founded "Dumbledore's Army," a secret, underground, student-led organization that practiced combat magic and formed a resistance that opposed the likes of Dolores Umbridge and that fought in the Battle of Hogwarts. It was Neville Longbottom who led the charge while wielding the Sword of Gryffindor, and it was Harry Potter who finally destroyed Voldemort once and for all. Newcomers to the institution are divided between the houses by the Sorting Hat in the first major ceremony of each school year, and that placing will determine who they live, study, and work with for the next seven years of their lives.

In the books and movies, the common room is shown to be full of big velvet-looking chairs, with a big fireplace, wooden floor, and lots of rugs giving it a homey and cozy feeling. The decoration is also inspired by the house colors, full of shades of red and gold. Each founder took their turn enchanting the hat with the values and beliefs of each of their houses. This was the way that the founders found to ensure that students would be sorted to their proper houses based on the students and the houses’ values.

Famous generational wandmaker Garrick Ollivander was also a Ravenclaw student during his time at Hogwarts, as was Gilderoy Lockhart, a short-lived Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, author, and a five-time winner of the Witch Weekly Most Charming Smile Award. Ravenclaw, founded by Rowena Ravenclaw, focuses on students interested in learning and wisdom. While most students at Hogwarts are there to learn, Ravenclaws take their quest for knowledge to a new level with their diligence. Students have to stand in front of the correct spot on a blank wall and provide the correct password. The interior of the common room includes leather sofas, armchairs, and green lamps. Part of what adds to the ambiance of the space is the green lighting that it has, which comes from being underneath the Great Lake.

Take the escalator to the park’s lower area and you’ll encounter rides based on Revenge of the Mummy and Transformers. Of all the houses, Slytherin had the most turbulent journey to take after the Battle of Hogwarts. The house was hated for a number of years for the role it had played in the Second Wizarding War, but it would eventually emerge the better for it.

They flocked around Draco Malfoy, who they admired and who exhibited the traits of Slytherin. Hermione Granger, while more than clever enough for Ravenclaw, valued courage above all, and was sorted into Gryffindor, a House she said sounded "by far the best". If you are looking for the brainiest students – you would find them in Ravenclaw (with a couple of notable exceptions like Hermione Granger). The Ravenclaw colours are blue and bronze, the emblem is an eagle, the Head of House is Professor Filius Flitwick and the common room sits at the top of Ravenclaw Tower behind an enchanted knocker.

Which Hogwarts House Do You Belong In? Harry Potter Quiz

Rowling unleashed her "Harry Potter" books upon the world, fans have spent a great deal of time dreaming of getting their invitation to Hogwarts, Britain's premier source of mystic education, and discovering which of its four houses they would ultimately be sorted into. Each house was created by one of the four founders of the school according to their respective specialties, personalities, and philosophies regarding magic. In the series, students play popular wizarding games like Exploding Snap and Wizard Chess in the common room to pass the time.

Founder

With rides, shops and no shortage of Butterbeer, fans will find themselves transported into the world of the beloved boy wizard. It was mainly Slytherins who joined Dolores Umbridge's "Inquisitorial Squad" and spied on other students, docking points and reporting anybody who disagreed with or resisted the evil woman's new rules. Similarly, it was Draco Malfoy, the most famous member of the house, who managed to sneak several Death Eaters into Hogwarts during "The Half-Blood Prince" and disarm Dumbledore so Snape could kill the headmaster and cement his cover as a loyal servant of Voldemort. Rowena founded her house on the simple assertion that the primary focus of a Hogwarts student should be education and intelligence.

Plus, there’s no admission, so you can visit CityWalk even if you don’t have tickets to the theme park. Don’t miss the dancing water-fountain display at its centre, designed by the same people who created the Bellagio's fountains in Las Vegas. And keep an eye out for the camera crews and hosts of the TV show Extra, who regularly film segments around the theme park and CityWalk.

In our view, loyalty (one of Hufflepuff’s key traits) and friendship go hand in hand, reinforcing just how well this colour suits this house. Winter holidays are another big draw, with Cindy Lou and her Who friends reading the Dr Seuss classic book during Grinchmas. There’s also a nightly tree-lighting ceremony complete with a picturesque evening snowfall—and Hogsmeade will offer holiday-themed foods as well as a yuletide version of the summer light show across Hogwarts Castle. Universal CityWalk marks the Christmas season with concerts, nightly snowfall of its own and a giant tree during CityWalk Holiday Season.

Like other houses, Ravenclaw has a Quidditch team, and students can explore the grounds and Hogsmeade. Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs were members of the Order of the Phoenix during Harry's fifth year. Luna Lovegood, a Ravenclaw student one year below Harry, even went with Harry to the Ministry of Magic during "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."

Previous Hogwarts Headmaster Phineas Nigellus Black was also a Slytherin, as were many members of the Black family. Like other previous headmasters, Black's portrait hung in the headmaster's office at Hogwarts, meaning Harry and other students interacted with the portrait. Though little is known about him during his life, in death as a portrait he did favors for the headmasters that came after him, including helping Severus Snape check on Harry, Ron, and Hermione in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." While many know that Lord Voldemort was a Slytherin, there are several other house alumni who didn't go down the same path. One of the most well-known wizards of all time, Merlin, was a Slytherin, and he did not cause a wizarding war like Voldemort did. Slytherin is often considered the "evil" house of Hogwarts, but there is much more to the house founded by Salazar Slytherin.

The life of a Gryffindor student

Additionally, he built the Chamber of Secrets and placed the basilisk within it that first Tom Riddle and then a bewitched Ginny Weasley unleashed upon the school's unsuspecting students. He specifically created this chamber so that his heirs could later open it and let the monster inside drive out "impure" students. With a founder like this, it's pretty easy to see why Slytherin developed a sinister reputation. The common room is filled with tables and bookshelves, creating an ideal study environment for Ravenclaw students. With a house library at their fingertips, students could remain in their dorm rather than venture to the library. In celebration of their founder, a marble statue of Rowena Ravenclaw stands beside the door to the dorm rooms.

In the latter half of the 2010s, many of the series' main characters began sending their children to the school, and James Potter II, Lily L. Potter, and Rose Granger-Weasley were all sorted into the house. Gryffindor wanted his students to have the courage to put their education to good use, while Hufflepuff valued those who were diligent and kind. Ravenclaw believed that the sole purpose of a student at a school should be knowledge and learning, while Slytherin wanted his underlings to be pure-blooded wizards that would never shy from using their cunning to keep the Wizarding World on top. Fans are familiar with Luna Lovegood and Cho Chang, two popular Ravenclaws in the series, but they may not know some of these house members. Uric the Oddball is one of the most interesting historical figures of the wizarding world because of the odd circumstances he put himself in. Uric listened to a Fwooper, an African bird that can drive someone unwell in the head with their call, for three months in the name of health benefits and slept in a room with Augureys, thinking their cries meant he was dead.

A wide, circular room with arched windows where blue and bronze silks hung, with a large midnight blue carpet covered in stars that are reflected onto the domed ceiling, Ravenclaw’s common room is one of the airiest of the four house common rooms. By the door leading to the dormitories, there is a tall statue of Rowena Ravenclaw made of white marble. The house founded by Godric Gryffindor values bravery, daring, nerve, and chivalry. To express those characteristics, the lion was chosen as the houses’ symbol, with the vibrant house colors being red and gold. After the founders, Hogwarts continued holding each house’s values and teaching the newer generation of wizards.

The significant object of Hufflepuff was Helga Hufflepuff's Cup, which was [turned into a Horcrux by Tom Riddle. Technically, the Simpsons scenes are just projected around you while your car lifts and tilts, but the feeling is all real—as if you are zooming through a psychedelic animated universe. You star in a carnival mid-way through, then rocket through Krustyland, the fantasy amusement park created by creepy-and-cranky Krusty the Clown. With the show’s real actors voicing the characters and offering plenty of subversive humour, the ride effectively captures the unique essence of the show—so if you’re a fan, it’s a must-ride experience. Step into the fantasy world of America’s loudest cartoon dad, Homer Simpson, in this crayon-bright recreation of Springfield, which now fronts the popular The Simpsons ride at Universal Studios Hollywood.

The house colors from the books are blue and bronze, and their mascot is the eagle. Blue isn't a color that only evokes sadness; it also can symbolize confidence and obsession, which describes how Ravenclaw students are when they are studying or trying to find new information. The only house ghost related to a founder, the Grey Lady, also known as Helena Ravenclaw, died after she stole her mother's diadem and refused to go back to Hogwarts when a baron came for her.

Thus, she selected the students who were the most curious, creative, witty, and clever to join her house, one of whom was Ignatia Wildsmith, the inventor of Floo Powder. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Hufflepuff lived up to its symbolic animal, the badger, and was the only house besides Gryffindor to have nearly every single one of its students stand up and fight Voldemort's army. Though they valued peace, tolerance, and kindness, they were more than willing to fight for what was right, especially when threatened on their home turf.

This cosy room is partially underground, with low-ceilings and round windows that are level with the earth, giving Hufflepuff students an excellent view of rolling grass and dandelions. A very apt symbol for the house founded by a man who could not only talk to snakes but kept a giant one in a secret chamber beneath the school. Outside of the wizarding world, the snake often represents cunning – a trait which is very much part of the Slytherin identity. For example, as part of the Chinese zodiac, those born in the year of the snake are known to be calculating, clever and curious too. That meant using original moulds from familiar Walking Dead characters (such as 'Bicycle Girl', seen in the pilot episode) and designing sets to replicate some of the show’s most famous scenes.

Though Professor Filius Flitwick, who taught charms, was the head of house, Gilderoy Lockhart was the first famous Ravenclaw featured in the "Harry Potter" series. After he graduated Hogwarts, he used memory charms to steal credit for others' achievements, write about them as if they were his own, and pass himself off as a valiant adventurer. He became the school's new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher during "Chamber of Secrets," but was ultimately outed by Harry and Ron when he tried to flee and accidentally erased his own mind. Gryffindor was praised and honored for its lengthy, involved role in the defeat of Voldemort and the achievements of its many students, and thus it remains one of the most respected houses at the school.

It's beautiful and hypnotic and fun to guess what kind of object will be revealed as you drag a circle to the center of the screen as it expands into a full high-resolution image. The mansion was designed by the architectural firm of Babb, Cook & Willard in the style of a Georgian country house. Another innovation was the inclusion of both central heating and a precursor to air-conditioning. In the cellar, enormous twin boilers were run by coal transferred from storage bin to furnace by a coal car that traveled over a miniature railroad track.

Trained at the Kansas City Art Institute, April Greiman (American, born 1948) continued her studies at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel, Switzerland. Establishing a studio in Los Angeles, California, in 1976, she became the leading figure of the emergent “NEW WAVE” design movement. Greiman’s transmedia approach to design juxtaposes typography, photography, and other elements. A prominent artist of the Arts and Crafts movement, Alice Cordelia Morse (American, 1863–1961) started her career as a glass painter for the firm of Louis C. Tiffany before returning to The Cooper Union for postgraduate training in art and design. She began designing book covers in the late 1880s and quickly became one of the most sought-after artists in the field. There are several private parking garages located close to Cooper Hewitt.

Greiman’s approach to design is to look at the page as a three-dimensional space through the juxtaposition of typography, photography, and other elements. April Greiman (American, born 1948) trained at Kansas City Art Institute from 1966 to 1970 and continued her postgraduate studies with Wolfgang Weingart and Armin Hoffman at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel, Switzerland, from 1970 to 1971. Greiman became an instructor at Philadelphia College of Art and worked in both Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and New York City. Guest curator Rebeca Méndez considers how culture, design, technology, and the natural world have converged throughout history. From the 1890s to the 1920s, Sophia Crownfield designed prints for prominent silk and wallpaper firms in the United States.

It sounds more like modern times than 1915, but Dr. Roy Lanterman was ahead of his time when he wanted to build a fireproof bungalow made of reinforced concrete. The house is a private neighborhood, and there's no parking at the house. In 1976, she moved to Los Angeles, California, and established her own studio, where she became the leading figure of emergent “NEW WAVE” design. Greiman was then appointed to Director of the California Institute of the Arts in 1982 where she had the opportunity to work with photographer Jayme Odgers to experiment with video and computers.

Landscape Architects Hood Design revitalized the museum’s massive garden. Pentagram and Village are responsible for the museum’s new graphic identity as well as the clear and colorful signage throughout the building, written in Cooper Hewitt’s custom, open-sourced typeface. And don’t forget everyone involved with the interactive media, website and digital collections.

Looking at an 18th century red Chinese vase and want to see other vases? Like the wall texts, you can also touch The Pen to the table to save the vase to your collection for later reference. You can explore the museum’s offerings by randomly drawing lines or shapes on the surface and letting the computer bring up an object that corresponds to your scribbling. Use the tables software to create your buildings, lamps, chairs, or hats. Strangely, the streamlined modern tables don't seem too out of place in even the most ornate spaces because everywhere you look there is a pleasing blend of the old with the new. An Atlas of Es Devlin is the first monographic museum exhibition dedicated to British artist and stage designer Es Devlin (born 1971), who is renowned for work that transforms audiences.

Please wash and sanitize hands frequently during your visit and practice good hygiene. We are asking all visitors who are sick or feel unwell to please stay home. On Thursday, May 2, Cooper Hewitt will be closed to the public from 10 a.m. Tickets are not required to visit the Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden, the museum cafe, and SHOP Cooper Hewitt.
